Alex Graham
CEO, Wall to Wall

Born in Glasgow, Wall to Wall CEO Alex Graham has been a leading figure in UK independent television production sector for almost 30 years.  Educated at Glasgow University and City University, London he graduated from City with a Diploma in Journalism in 1978.  After spells at the Bradford Telegraph and Argus and the Sunday Times, he joined London Weekend Television in 1979.  In 1983, he left to join Diverse Productions, where he became editor of Channel 4’s flagship current affairs series Diverse Reports and, in 1987, he set up Wall to Wall.  For more than 20 years, under Alex’s leadership, Wall to Wall has created a remarkable range of popular and critically acclaimed programming from hit series like New Tricks, Long Lost Family, The Voice UK to award‑winning films like A Rather English Marriage and Man on Wire.  Alex created two of Wall to Wall’s groundbreaking history series – The 1900 House and Who Do You Think You Are?

Wall to Wall has an unrivalled reputation for combining quality and innovation.  For three years running it has been voted the “most admired” production company in the UK by its peers.  Real Screen magazine’s poll placed it as one of the top seven companies in the world.  The company’s programmes have won almost every major television award including BAFTA, Emmy, Royal Television Society and Peabody awards.  And in 2009, the company’s first feature documentary – Man On Wire – won the Academy Award for best documentary.  In November 2007, Wall to Wall became part of the Shed Media Group of companies.

Alex is chair of the Sheffield International Documentary Festival.  He is a former chair of the Producers’ Alliance for Cinema and Television (Pact) and now sits on their Patrons’ Group.  He is a trustee of New Deal of the Mind, an ambassador for ActionAid, with whom he recently travelled to Myanmar, and a Board Member of the Hampstead Theatre.

He is a fellow of the Royal Television Society and the Royal Society of Arts.  He is a visiting professor of television at Lincoln University and in 2009 he received an honorary doctorate from City University for services to journalism.
