Vivian Hunt,
Director, McKinsey & Company

Vivian is a Director of McKinsey & Company, based in London. She was promoted in June 2010 to lead McKinsey’s Pharmaceutical and Medical Products Practice covering all strategy, commercial, R&D and other areas for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).  She has a 20 year career serving a variety of healthcare clients across the full value chain – including payors, providers, manufacturers, pharmacy and industry associations.  She has worked across this full range of players in Europe, US and several Asian and West African markets.  The Practice is one of McKinsey’s EMEA top 3 industry groups and, under her leadership, is growing in double digits across the region.

Recent experience at Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director level includes:

  • Industry Association and Board Level Counselling – Vivian has served industry associations in UK BIA and ABPI, Italy Farmindustria, Greece, Netherlands and other markets.  She has hosted several strategy workshops for the respective organisations. She has also been the convener or speaker at several cross industry fora (e.g., FT and WSJ background interviews 2011, Payor Pharma Roundtable; EPHPIA Vaccines, etc.)
  • Pharmaceuticals and Medical Products: Vivian serves leading pharmaceutical companies on a broad range of strategy, development and in-line health economics and organisation and, most recently, innovative payor collaborations at both Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and regional payor level across the UK, Europe and the US.  This includes real-life health economic collaborations with acute hospitals.  She has also worked on due diligence and integration for a range of recent global pharma transactions, including extensive recent work in China
  • She supported the commercial strategy and developed operational plans for more than 25 major ethical and over-the-counter drugs in, for example, hypertension, diabetes, respiratory, smoking cessation, thrombosis, depression, sexual health and oncology.  She also led major corporate strategy/M&A and subsequent post-merger management engagements
  • UK and EU pharmacy and health care management: Vivian is recognised as one of McKinsey’s leading experts in both private and community pharmacy and wholesaling.  She has also worked in a range of specialty health contexts including Primary Care Trusts (PCTs), acute and mental health trusts.  This includes efforts brand and channel performance; industry consolidation and regulatory change and global turnaround
  • Board level counselling.  Vivian was invited to join the Board of the Henry Smith Charity (£25m+ disbursements) and also remains on the Board of Action on Addiction, a UK based treatment, training and research charity committed to supporting people and families struggling with all forms of addiction  In 2011 she served on their nominating committee to confirm a new Chairman.  In addition, she serves as a reader for the Queen’s Prize and has provided pro bono support to the Moorfields Eye Hospital and Research team.

Vivian has written several published articles and presented at external conferences on a range of healthcare topics including alternative operating models, innovative growth strategies and Consumerism in Healthcare (e.g., keynote speaker at BIO 2009–2011, Financial Times Pharmaceuticals) amongst others.  She recently published a strategy white paper for Pharmaceuticals (2011) and edited McKinsey’s European Healthcare Commercial Compendium.

Vivian has broad geographic experience through serving clients and health systems across ten major markets in the UK, continental Europe and the US.  Further, she has direct experience with rural primary care and midwifery in West Africa and urban primary care financing.

Recently she spoke on the breadth of this experience the McKinsey Global BCSS Conference (2009) and is the Global Chair of this event (Nov 2011).

Prior to joining McKinsey, Vivian worked in both management and performance improvement roles in the healthcare and consumer sectors.  She served as a Regional Coordinator, Midwife and Volunteer in the US Peace Corps (Senegal) and as a Healthcare Project Director, helping to structure and launch a partially-capitated Medicaid-managed care plan in New York City. She also served on the board and finance committees for the plan. 

Vivian holds British and American citizenship and has lived in the United Kingdom for 12 years. Vivian holds an A.B. cum laude in Sociology and Government, and an MBA from Harvard University.  She is married with 2 children.
